Association for Specialist Fire Protection

The ASFP operates a number of technical task groups and committees which undertake the work of the association. This includes drafting the documents that are published on the website and elsewhere; determining policy and activities in a number of areas e.g. marketing; and organising events.

ASFP members are permitted to join as many groups as they wish, with any company representatives able to join any task group appropriate to their interest and expertise. Non-members are usually not permitted to join any group except in extraordinary circumstances e.g. if they have a particular skill or expertise which the association values. A précis of each group is given below.

 

Technical Groups

ASFP Technical Committee (TCOM) - The Technical Committee (TCOM) is the main ASFP committee on technical matters and all the technical Task Groups below report to TCOM. TCOM decides what tasks are allocated to the various task groups and also reviews any decisions or publications that task groups produce before they go to ASFP Council for approval before publication. Where publications transcend the scope of a number of Task Groups then TCOM is responsible, as is the case with the ASFP Guide to Passive Fire Protection for Fire Risk Assessors. ASFP Task Group 1 Reactive coatings – TG1 covers Reactive or intumescent coatings for the fire protection of steel structures. Together with TG2 (below) it is responsible for drafting and maintaining the iconic ASFP Yellow Book – Fire protection for structural steel in Buildings now in its 5th edition. TG1 is also responsible for a number of Technical Guidance Documents including TGD 11 Code of Practice Onsite use of Intumescents. TG1 meets approximately 4 times a year. ASFP Task Group 2 Non-reactive products – TG2 covers non-reactive products such as boards, sprays and renders for the fire protection of steel structures. Together with TG1 (above) it is responsible for ASFP Yellow Book and is also responsible for a number of Technical Guidance Documents including TGD 2 Sprayed Mineral coating. ASFP Task Group 3 Fire-stopping – TG3 covers fire-stopping including penetration seals, linear joint seals and cavity barriers and is one of the most active groups together with TG1. It is responsible for drafting and maintaining the recently revised ASFP Red book – Fire stopping & penetration seals for the construction industryand is also responsible for a number of Technical Guidance Documents including TGD 17 Code of practice for installation & inspection of firestopping, TGD 19 Fire test method for open state cavity barriers and the recently published ASFP On-site guide to installing fire-stopping . ASFP Task Group 4 Reaction to fire – TG4 considers reaction to fire of passive fire protection products such as coatings and drafted the ASFP Orange book – Fire retardant coating systems, which contains a summary of the reaction to fire tests used for all products in support of Building Regulations. These include both the British Standard 476 tests and the European tests used to determining ‘Euroclasses’. TG4 is currently dormant. Chairman: Clive Atkins, (FPCL) email chairman

ASFP Task Group 5 Partitions – TG5 considers reaction to fire and fire resistance performance of non-loadbearing partitions and drafted the ASFP Purple book – Fire resisting non-loadbearing partitions. TG5 is currently dormant. Chairman: Nigel Morrey, (Etex Group) email chairman

ASFP Task Group 6 Fire resisting & smoke control ducts and dampers – TG6 has a wide remit and covers both fire resisting & smoke control ducts and dampers and is one of the more active groups together with TG1. It is responsible for drafting and maintaining the recently revised ASFP Blue book (BS) – Fire resisting ductwork tested to BS 476: Part 24 3rd edition, the Blue Book (EN) – Fire resisting ductwork classified to BS EN 13501 parts 3 & 4 and the ASFP Grey BookFire and smoke resisting dampers.TG6 meets approximatelythree times a year. ASFP Task Group 7 Active Fire Curtain Barriers – TG7covers issues related to active fire curtain barrier systems. This group was established in December 2016 and is currently drafting the ASFP Black Book which aims to provide guidance on the specification, use and application of active fire curtain barriers. Non-Technical Groups

ASFP Council – Members are not permitted to attend Council meetings as the Council is an elected body, with the selection process taking place annually at the ASFP AGM. ASFP Council defines the vision, decides on strategy and is the overall governing body of the association. All ASFP publications have to be agreed by Council before publication. ASFP Certification Task Group – discusses issues surrounding the third party certification of products and contractors with the UK certification bodies, all of whom are members of the association. Third party certification is the backbone of ASFP’s drive to increase the quality of passive fire protection products and their installation and is a requirement of membership for installation contractors. ASFP Contracting Task Group – discusses issues relevant to ASFP contractor members which could include the ASFP codes of practice that members follow such as TGD 11 Code of Practice Onsite use of Intumescents or matters relating to third party certification. ASFP Marketing Task Group – decides marketing policy and strategy and is responsible for coordinating all of the association’s marketing activities including: press releases, PR on events and other ASFP activities, social media and organising the Association’s presence at exhibitions such as International Firex. ASFP Sustainability Task Group – discusses matters relating to the sustainability of passive fire protection. It meets as and when needed. Minutes of the sustainability task group can be accessed here. Chairman: Currently unoccupied

ASFP Ireland Task Group 1 - decides policy and strategy for ASFP Ireland and is responsible for planning policy, activities and events in Ireland, as well as considering membership development, marketing and training. Chairman: Rob O’Byrne (Tennants Building Products) email chairman

European Association For Passive Fire Protection (EAPFP). EAPFP represents national trade associations for passive fire protection such as ASFP. The group is actively involved in solving matters of mutual interest across Europe and ASFP plays an active part in its activities. Minutes and other documents can be accessed here
