Exova Warrington certification offers CPR advice

Exova Warrington Certification, part of the global Exova testing group, is warning of the effects of the Construction Products Regulation for manufacturers, distributors, end users, specifiers and architects when it comes into force on 1 July 2013.

Under the CPR, it will become mandatory for manufacturers or the legal entity placing a product on the market to apply CE marking to any product covered by a harmonised European standard (hEN).

"Where a manufacturer chooses to test firestopping products, for example, ablative coated boards, putty and fire stop pillows to a European Technical Assessment (ETA) which has a clause allowing for CE marking, then the manufacturer will have to also apply a CE mark and produce a Declaration of Performance (DoP) for the product, the same as an harmonised EN standard," said Paul Duggan, certification manager for Exova Warrington Certification.

DoPs are replacing the current Manufacturers' Declarations, which are produced when declaring the performance of the product for ENs or ETAs. If a product available on the market is found not to be in compliance with the requirements of the DoP, then it should be withdrawn or recalled from the market. It is really quite simple: no DoP means no CE marking; no CE marking means no product for market.

Exova Warrington Certification offers expertise in a diverse range of areas including product certification, CE marking, marine certification, installer certification, on-site inspection and fire risk assessor certification.

SIKA adds to Unitherm range

Sika has added the Unitherm Platinum one coat, solvent free system to its Unitherm range of fire protection solutions.

Using epoxy technology, the Sika Unitherm Platinum system is suitable for both interior and exterior use. Certified to BS 476- 21 and EN 13381-8 it offers protection for up to 90 minutes.

It is simple to apply and requires no reinforcement making it ideal for use on structural steelwork including columns, girders and frameworks, along with castellated and complex steel building elements. Unitherm Platinum can also be applied to cantered beams without the risk of cracking after installation, thus preserving the aesthetics of the steel structure.

Sika Unitherm Platinum offers fast coating and curing. It is touch dry in 12 hours and, after just 24 hours the steel can be moved outside for storage without risk of damage from rain or other adverse weather conditions.

High mechanical impact shock and abrasion resistance means the steel does not need additional protection when being transported or assembled on site. The coating is flexible it can tolerate being knocked, banged or bashed and will show little or no sign of damage, keeping costly post site repairs and unsightly flaking of new structures to a minimum.

As a result, Sika Unitherm Platinum offers substantial overall savings in time and labour, both of which makes savings to the real cost of installation.

Chiltern International Fire Announces 2013 Course Dates

Following its two successful events last year, Chiltern International Fire (CIF) has announced two further dates in 2013 for its one-day CPD certified course, Fire Protection in Buildings Explained – the Role of Passive
Fire Protection Products.

The course, which combines classroom seminars with multiple live fire demonstrations, will be held at CIF's headquarters in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire on 4 June and 22 October.

Delegates will gain an understanding of how passive fire protection products enhance a building's fire resistance, protect both buildings and people, reduce the spread of fire through secondary ignition and limit the
spread of flame and smoke.

The course is designed for building contractors, facilities and estates managers, fire engineers, housing associations, local authorities, fire stopping installation
companies and individuals designated as the 'Responsible Person' under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.

Each course costs £285 plus VAT or £255 plus VAT for TRADA members.

Pyroplex Leads The Race In Europe

Pyroplex Ltd has applied significant resources to obtain a CE mark for its fire rated pipe collars and pipe wraps, well in advance of the 1st July implementation date of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR).

After this date, all products to be CE-marked will need to demonstrate compliance with a harmonised European product standard (hEN) or European Technical Approval. They can then carry the CE mark at the point of sale or installation.

Since this specialist area of fire sealing products has been subject to many delays in the preparation of the necessary testing procedures and/or European Technical Approval documents, implementation will present a tight schedule that may have some manufacturers struggling, not just in the UK, but across Europe.

Pyroplex took an active role in the drafting process. By committing to it, the company gained a head start in getting its products onto the market bearing the mandatory CE mark. The company is committed to new product development
and collaborates with fully accredited test houses worldwide to develop an extensive international testing programmes.

The Pyroplex range of penetration seals comprises pipe collars, covering 25mm to 400mm diameter pipes, and pipe wraps from 55mm to 160mm diameter pipes. Within these ranges, there are individual products with two hour and one hour fire resistance periods.

All Pyroplex Fire Containment Systems have been tested and approved to the highest possible standards. This includes third party approval through leading
schemes.
