With over 30 years’ experience in the testing, assessment and certification of Fire Resisting elements, I have an in-depth knowledge of the performance of building elements when subject to elevated temperatures and the requirements necessary to ensure correct performance.

My most recently been involved at most levels of the certification process for Fire Resisting elements in The UK, Europe and Internationally. I have been instrumental in developing UL’s business for fire safety in Europe and was, until recently, Head of UL’s European Notified Body for fire protection and detection materials.

My prior responsibilities have included:

  • Chairman of CEN/TC127/WG3, the committee responsible for developing and maintaining the test and extended application standards for Fire Resisting and smoke control doorsets.
  • Chair of FSH/22/5, the UK Mirror committee for BSI Standards of fire and smoke doorsets.
  • Chairman of Certification product groups for fire/smoke doors & shutters, building hardware, door seals and glass
  • Active member of various Trade Association liaison groups including Fire Resisting Glass, Building hardware and Timber and Steel doorsets

Clive Miles

I founded CLM 30 years ago and during that time, have been lucky enough to partner with some of the largest construction businesses delivering PFP to the UK and London’s most iconic buildings.

My role as CLM Group CEO is full-time; the business employs over 130 staff and through 2019 we delivered our ambitious 12-month growth strategy headed up by my Strategy Director and individual Business Managers.

Chairing industry think tanks and leading client design standard development programs enables me to personally drive best practice, ensure compliance and champion innovation across the PFP sector.

Retaining and investing in my people is also incredibly important; without a winning team, my goals and aspirations are unachievable and so I will continue to work hard to develop what I truly believe is the best team in the industry who live and breathe my personal and business values and culture of honesty, delivering excellence, providing opportunity for all and having a strong sense of accountability and pride in the work we deliver.

Clive Anthony Atkins
Managing Director of Fire Protection Coatings Limited in Coventry

I have actively been involved in the fire industry for over 35 years, both passive and active. I have served as Chairman of the ASFP and have been Chair of the Marketing Task Group and an ever-present member of the council. I have also served on the FSDG and was Chair of the Coventry and Solihull FPA.

I am currently the Managing Director of Fire Protection Coatings Limited in Coventry specialising in Epoxy Intumescent coating, Thermal Enclosures, Flame and Timber Intumescent coatings, and Fire Barrier systems.

I have extensive fire industry experience and have been Commercial Director of Nullifire (Tremco CPG), Sales and Marketing Manager with Angus Fire Armour Limited, Specification Manager for Angus Fire Armour, and Sales Manager for HCB Angus Limited. My early experience was in active fire systems e.g. sprinkler systems, fire-fighting foam, fire hoses and pumps, and fire fighting vehicles, moving into passive fire products with Nullifire, before establishing Fire Protection Coatings Limited in 2002.

Carl Atkinson
Director of IDFC ltd

Currently a Director of IDFC Limited, a Staffordshire-based passive fire protection consultant. I formed IDFC Limited in 2020 after leaving the Chairman’s position at FSi Limited after 20 years at the helm. FSi have been a strategic worldwide manufacturer of fire stopping products over this time. Having over 35 years of experience within the passive fire protection industry, I have seen many developments and growth within the sector. An active member of both BSi and CEN TC127 WG1, WG2, and WG7, the latter since 1998, sitting on numerous task groups and is project manager of TG2 and TG8 developing test standards for the European industry. I also sit on the BSi mirror committees of FSH22 & FSH22/3. I am the current Past Chairman of the Association of Specialist Fire Protection has been a Council member since 2013.

Barry Beavis
Sales Director of Sharpfibre Ltd

I have worked in sales within several industry sectors including mobile/cellular technology and construction plant equipment, working for several manufacturers selling and managing teams responsible for selling into the hire market.

I joined Sharpfibre in February 2018 with no prior experience in passive fire protection. However, the Sharpfibre team, with their decades of experience and knowledge, quickly helped me to understand the different disciplines within our business and to better understand the industry. My passion is to always provide the best customer experience possible and this drives both myself, as well as the rest of the sales team at Sharpfibre, to always exceed our client’s expectations.

Sharon McClure
Director of Avesta Scotland Ltd

In my early working years, I spent much of my time within Customer Service roles in a wide range of industry sectors, before becoming involved in the Construction Industry in a business management role encompassing business development and health and safety roles.

Through involvement in the industry, an opportunity arose in passive fire protection and I have now been involved in the industry for over 15 years, becoming an ambassador for our industry, through my involvement within the Scottish Contractors Group / BuildUK / BuildScotland; Construction Scotland Procurement Working Group and previously contributing as previously both a Chair of a regional training group and a Scottish representative at the National Group within the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

Now as an ASFP Council Member, I am also supporting the Academy for Construction People as part of their Executive Committee, with their pilot scheme for Passive Fire Protection, providing a mixture of class and site training to increase the knowledge of the apprentices and ensure a more robust form of training, supported by Avesta and key members of our experienced staff to allow UK contractors to benefit from this training.

As an active member of our industry, I hope to contribute to the improvements of not just our trade, but of the built environment as a whole.

Nigel Martin Morrey
Regional Technical Director of Etex Building Performance

I have worked in the fire protection sector, principally for fire protection board manufacturing companies, for over 30 years. Over this time, I have worked in operations, marketing and technical and have qualified as a fire safety engineer (MSc Fire Safety Engineering) and am a member of the Institute of Fire Engineers (MIFireE).

In my current role as Regional Technical Director for Etex Building Performance, North West Europe I have overall technical service, development and compliance responsibilities for the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands and the Nordic Countries, specifically focussed on the Siniat drylining systems and Promat passive fire protection. In addition to the Siniat and Promat ranges, I work closely with the Etex New Ways Division – EOS SFS (structural framing systems) where we have jointly developed and launched the Thruwall fire rated non-loadbearing SFS and Thrubuild fire rated load bearing SFS systems which integrate both Siniat and Promat products into unique system solutions. In 2020, following the acquisition of the FSi firestopping business, as Etex Integration Manager, I work closely with the FSi management team on the development of the FSi firestopping products and systems and their full integration into the Etex Group.

I started in 1992 leaving school after completing A-Levels and started on my career in fire protection. Whilst working for SFS I completed my degree in Construction Management part-time and put myself through health and safety training attaining my NEBOSH (Construction) qualification. I also completed the ASFP Level 3 training and passed the IFE Level 3 in Passive Fire Protection and subsequently gained Technical Membership (TIFireE) with the Institute of Fire Engineers.

Working from the bottom to the top I have covered all roles in the company and am conversant in all aspects of the industry. Throughout my career I have always pushed to further develop and challenge myself, the company and the Industry.

As a company we have represented the ASFP for many years, I have been an active council member for the last 3 years and thoroughly enjoyed attending every council meeting in person and obviously virtually for the last year.

Bob Westcombe

I have worked at Rockwool as UK FP manager for 10 years after 23 years at Hilti, largely in a similar role

I was originally trained in Firestopping in the USA and Germany, but have spent most of my time in the UK working with Specialist FP contractors, Main Contractors, running field based technical support teams, and product development.

I have for many years been lucky enough to be an active ASFP Council member and was recently involved technically in the development of the FS training modules and many other initiatives.

I have also seen how the ASFP has developed both financially and in terms of reputation in our Industry.

I recently completed the IFE Level 3, and have been putting through many of my company’s employees, as a keen supporter that competence for our Industry is key

Ian Woodhouse
Director of Certification of IFCGroup

During my varied career of 36 years in the Fire Protection Sector I have worked in Product Development & Manufacture, Contracting, Installation and (over the past 19 years) Certification and Inspection. Throughout my career in the fire protection sector I have continually supported the raising of standards in fire & life safety in buildings, promoting the use of reputable & proven products, systems, & competent installers to specifiers, end users, also enforcement and approval authorities. I have also been involved in the development of National Occupational Standards from which training courses / qualifications have subsequently been developed for the fire protection industry.

Over the past 9 years I have been working as part of the IFC Group (International Fire Consultants Group) specifically within the independent IFC Certification Ltd (IFCC), dealing with product and installer certification and inspection activities. For the past five years I have been responsible for the overall operation and continued development of IFCC as Director of Certification.
