Adapting Third-Party Certification Schemes to the Golden Thread: Key Insights from the ASFP Webinar

29 July 2024

This month marks the latest instalment in the ASFP webinar series, where we delve into the essential topic of adapting third-party certification schemes to align with the Golden Thread initiative. This webinar, hosted by Andrew Taylor and featuring guest presenter Andrew Hutchinson from UK Testing and Certification (UKTC), explored how third-party certification is evolving to enhance building safety and ensure rigorous standards are met.

1) Understanding the Golden Thread Initiative

The Golden Thread initiative aims to improve building safety by ensuring that comprehensive and accurate information is available throughout a building's lifecycle. This initiative is crucial for both new and existing buildings, emphasizing the need for detailed and accessible records that outline the design, construction, and ongoing maintenance of buildings

2) Role of Third-Party Certification

Third-party certification schemes are vital in providing assurance that building products and installations meet stringent safety standards. These certifications serve as a cornerstone for ensuring the safety and reliability of fire-resistant products. The ASFP has long advocated for the importance of these certifications in the construction industry, pushing for increased rigour and transparency.

3) Challenges and Solutions

One of the main challenges highlighted is the inconsistency and inaccessibility of certification scheme rules. Many of these rules are complex and difficult to interpret, which can lead to varying interpretations even within the same certification body. To address this, the webinar emphasized the need for clear and accessible documentation, including hyperlinks to supporting evidence on certification bodies' websites. This would provide a single source of truth and ensure consistency across the industry.

4) Mandatory Certification and Public Access

The discussion also touched on the need for mandatory certification and the publication of certification data. By making this information freely accessible online, it would enhance transparency and credibility within the industry. This step is seen as essential for building trust and ensuring that all stakeholders can easily verify the compliance and performance of products.

"This webinar highlighted the critical role of detailed and accessible information in building safety. By enhancing the rigour of certification schemes, ensuring mandatory and transparent certification, and improving installer competence, the industry can move towards a future where safety, transparency, and integrity are paramount."
