What is a standard?
Standards are agreed ways of doing something, written down as a set of precise criteria so they can be used as rules, guidelines or definitions.
How are standards made?
Standards are put together by groups of industry experts, consumers, research organizations, government departments and more, all working together.
Different types of standard
Standards come in a number of different forms. Some tell you how to do something in great detail, others give more general information, and others simply define terms.
Standards and regulation
Standards are not the same thing as government regulations, but they’re often used in legislation to provide technical detail.
By applying the accumulated knowledge that standards encapsulate you can change the way you work at every level of your business, transforming
your prospects. Standards put in place the ‘ground rules’ for emerging technologies, allowing businesses to innovate more confidently and successfully.
Designed for voluntary use, you are free to follow the rules as you please. With some standards being very specific and others being general, the point is to provide a reliable basis for people to share the same expectations about a product or
service. This helps to facilitate trade and provide a framework for achieving economies, efficiencies, and interoperability to enhance consumer protection and confidence.

Free Standards for SME Members
If you are an SME company (A small or medium-sized enterprise with fewer than 250 employees) that is also a member of the ASFP, you are eligible to receive 100 BSI standards absolutely free. This is a policy decision taken by BSI in
response to trade associations reporting that some of their members found the cost of buying standards prohibitive. As a solution, BSI offers some Trade Associations a licensing opportunity to make a defined set of standards available
to qualifying SMEs via the trade association's own online services at discounted rates.
The ASFP have taken this one step further and are able to offer qualifying SME members those 100 standards completely FREE (licence limitations apply). These standards relate
to Passive Fire (those that are referred to in the ASFP Colour books) and include other useful quality management standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025.
