Important Update: Changes to the IFE Level 2 Certificate in Passive Fire Protection

03 June 2025

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) is pleased to announce significant updates to the IFE Level 2 Certificate in Passive Fire Protection. These changes reflect our ongoing commitment to improving accessibility, relevance, and professional development opportunities across the fire protection industry.

The updated qualification is now assessed entirely through an online multiple-choice examination format, making it more convenient and flexible for candidates to participate, regardless of their location.

To obtain the full Level 2 Certificate, candidates must now pass four individual unit exams, each focused on a distinct specialist area within passive fire protection:

  1. Structural Frame of the Building
  2. Fire-Resisting Walls, Floors, Ceilings, and Glazing
  3. Fire Stopping (including Cavity Barriers) and the Building Envelope
  4. Fire Doors and Shutters

In response to industry demand for more focused qualifications, candidates also have the option to pursue single-unit award examinations. Successfully passing any one of these units will result in a Level 2 Award Qualification in that specific area. This modular approach allows professionals to tailor their learning and certification to suit their current role or future career aspirations.

These enhancements not only support individual learning and development, but also help organisations ensure their teams are equipped with up-to-date knowledge in line with best practices in passive fire protection.

Whether you're working toward full certification or aiming to deepen your expertise in a particular area, the new structure offers a clear, accessible route to professional recognition.
