Firestopping Specialist Sector Group (FSSG): Managing Competence for Firestopping Activities and Specialist Occupations

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire, industry response groups were set up to take forward the recommendations made in Dame Judith Hackitt’s report ‘Building a Safer Future’. One of these, the Competence Steering Group, created Working Group 2 dedicated to defining competence requirements for installers throughout the built environment. Within this group, Firestopping Specialists was chosen as one of six priority occupations for pilot framework development. The Firestopping Specialist Sector Group (FSSG) was formed to take this work forward.

Here FSSG sets out challenges associated with competence within firestopping and presents a proposal for the future development and management of competence for firestopping specialists throughout the UK. The report includes:

  • Context
Information of the applicability of document contents, and contextual information which has informed the proposals made.
  • Functional map and framework of competencies
A map of the activities carried out within firestopping and proposed benchmarks for competence in each, in terms of skills, knowledge, experience and behaviour
  • Standard for competence
Proposals for the validation and revalidation of competence against the benchmarks
  • Implementing the standard
Actions required to turn the proposed future state into a reality, including development of new qualifications and mechanisms for ongoing confirmation of competence.

Comments are now invited on the proposals.
Responses will be monitored until 18th August 2023.
